The Most Expensive Lie in Shed Buying: ‘Steel is Steel’

When you’re shopping for a shed, it’s easy to assume that steel is steel. The colour looks right. The price looks competitive. And you’re told it’s “basically the same as Colorbond™”

So you move on, confident you’ve ticked the box.

The problem is, most issues with cheap or imported steel don’t show up straight away. They show up years later, once the shed’s built, paid for, and no longer easy to fix.

After more than 20 years building sheds across regional Victoria, I’ve seen the same imported steel traps catch people out time and time again.

There are three big ones you need to know about:

Trap #1: It’s Not Tested for Australian Conditions

Want to Know How Long Your Shed Will Really Take?

Not everyone knows this, but steel performance isn’t just about thickness or colour. It’s actually about how the coating holds up in the environment it’s used in.

In Australia, that means:

  • Strong UV
  • Big temperature swings
  • Heavy rain
  • Dust
  • Coastal and rural exposure

That’s why companies like BlueScope™ test their steel in Australian conditions, and why they use different coating systems in different countries. Because what works overseas doesn’t automatically work here.

Imported steel may perform perfectly well in the country it was designed for. But that doesn’t mean it’s suited to life in regional Victoria.

Lesson: Steel that hasn’t been tested locally is a gamble, and it’s one the buyer usually doesn’t realise they’re taking.

Trap #2: It Often Fades and Ages Faster Than You Expect

One of the most common complaints we hear is, “The shed just doesn’t look as good as we expected.”

And that’s usually because fading doesn’t happen overnight.

With some imported steels, colour changes can start showing within a couple of years. It’s especially noticeable when the shed sits near genuine BlueScope™ products - on a house roof, a fence, or another shed.

We’ve seen roofs that were meant to be blue fade almost to white, and walls that lose their depth and start looking tired long before they should.

The shed might still be standing and technically functional, but it doesn’t look like what was promised. And because a shed is a large, permanent structure, once that fading shows up, there’s no easy fix.

Trap #3: When Something Goes Wrong, There’s Often No Backup

This is where the real risk sits.

When you use Australian-made steel from BlueScope™, there’s a clear process if an issue arises.

They can:

  • Inspect the shed on site
  • Perform coating and scratch tests
  • Trace the steel back to the original coil

There’s accountability.

With imported steel, that support often doesn’t exist. There may be no local representative, no testing history, and no practical way to assess or resolve a warranty claim years down the track.

And when the steel has come through a long overseas supply chain, it’s not always clear who is actually responsible once the shed is built.

That’s not something you want to discover after the fact.

How to Avoid Saying: “I Thought I Was Getting Colorbond”

BENDIGO2021 - 3

Some buyers assume they’re getting Colorbond because the colour name sounds similar, the brochure looks right, or no one clearly says otherwise.

In fact, we’ve seen confusion around colour names like Slate Grey versus Woodland Grey, or trendy imported names like Monolith that sound premium but aren’t part of the Colorbond range.

One simple check: Genuine BlueScope™ sheets are branded on the back. If it’s not printed there, it’s worth asking more questions. And if a supplier can’t give you a straight answer about where the steel comes from, that’s usually a sign to slow down.

But steel quality is only part of the picture…

Cheaper sheds often rely on design shortcuts as well - things like knee bracing or apex bracing - to reduce material costs.

These shortcuts:

  • Reduce usable internal clearance
  • Create visual clutter
  • Get in the way of doors, machinery, or storage later

They’re not always obvious on a quote. But you feel them once you start using the shed.

How We Approach Materials at Outdoor Steel

We made a decision years ago to only use 100% Australian-made steel.

Why? Because it’s proven in Australian conditions, backed by a 20-year warranty, and supported locally if something ever goes wrong.

We choose materials the same way we approach the rest of our builds - with the long term in mind. Because once a shed is up, it has to live with you for decades.

We’d rather explain the difference upfront than defend problems later.

Bottom Line: What You Save Upfront You Often Lose In Long-Term Performance

A shed is a long-term decision. Once it’s built, you live with the result - good or bad - for decades.

The problem is, most people don’t realise what they should be checking until after the shed is up, the invoice is paid, and the shortcuts start showing.

That’s why we put together our free Shed Buyer’s Guide to help you ask the right questions before anything’s locked in.

Inside, you’ll discover:

  • What most shed quotes don’t include, and the common shortcuts (materials, design, responsibility) that make prices look cheaper than they really are.

  • The key questions to ask before choosing a shed company, so you can tell the difference between a kit seller and a builder who takes full responsibility.

  • Why materials, engineering, and construction details matter long-term, and how small decisions upfront affect durability, appearance, and usability later.

  • How permits, council rules, and site conditions impact your shed, including the things that cause delays, redesigns, and unexpected costs if they’re missed early.

  • What a realistic shed timeline looks like, and why quick promises often leave owners stuck waiting months longer than expected.

If you’re still comparing options, or you just want to be confident you’re making the right call, this guide will help you slow things down and make a smarter decision before anything’s locked in.
